Plateau University, Bokkos, has strongly rebutted circulating rumors suggesting that the National Universities Commission (NUC) intends to shut down the institution.
In a statement released by Mr. Yakubu Ayuba, the Registrar, on Sunday in Jos, the university refuted allegations made by Mr. Shittu Bamaiyi, the acting Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau.
Bamaiyi claimed that the NUC had finalized plans to close the university and revoke its accreditation due to alleged interference by the state government in university affairs.
Ayuba clarified that such claims were inaccurate and misleading, particularly as they originated from a political entity lacking authority in university management.
He emphasized that the university’s operations continued smoothly, with the successful conclusion of the semester’s lectures and upcoming examinations scheduled to begin on April 15, 2024. Admissions into both existing and new undergraduate and postgraduate programs, approved by the NUC, have also been finalized.
Addressing concerns regarding employee terminations, Ayuba assured that no staff, including those in newly established departments, had been dismissed. He underscored the university’s growth trajectory and reassured stakeholders that the government would not take any actions detrimental to students’ futures.
Furthermore, Ayuba stressed that there were no issues between the university and the NUC, and dismissed claims of a potential withdrawal of the university’s operating license as unfounded. The university’s management assured students, parents, staff, stakeholders, potential students, and the public of the stability and integrity of the institution’s relationship with regulatory bodies.
