The House of Representatives Committee on Disabilities has summoned the management of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) following allegations of discriminatory treatment towards Mr. Adebola Daniel, a person living with a disability and the son of former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel.

The committee, led by Bashiru Ayinla, representing Oshodi/Isolo-1 Federal Constituency, Lagos State, has expressed its determination to ensure that any violations of the Disability Act are met with appropriate legal action.

The incident in question took place at a KFC outlet within the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, where Mr. Daniel, who uses a wheelchair, was reportedly denied entry, with the manager allegedly stating, “No wheelchair allowed.” Ayinla condemned this action as unacceptable and a direct contravention of the principles of inclusivity and respect outlined in the Disability Act.

Emphasizing the importance of upholding the rights of persons with disabilities, Ayinla underscored the need for strict enforcement of the Disability Act, particularly concerning access to public spaces and employment opportunities. He referenced Mr. Daniel’s public account of the incident shared on social media, which shed light on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in Nigeria.

Ayinla reaffirmed the House’s commitment to collaborating with communities to ensure full compliance with the Disability Act, highlighting key provisions such as access to public buildings and employment quotas. He urged state governments to adopt and implement the Disability Act at the local level, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive enforcement.

Responding to potential concerns about the committee’s intentions, Ayinla clarified that their actions were driven by the overarching goal of promoting inclusivity and protecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of their physical abilities.
