In a bid to improve the worsening power supply situation in the country, The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has taken decisive action.
Adelabu summoned the Chief Executives of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), as well as the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Ahmed Abdulazeez, as he aims to address the pressing issues causing the decline in electricity supply.
In an official statement issued by his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, the Minister underscored the urgency of the matter. The Chief Executives have been called to attend a meeting in the coming week to discuss the challenges leading to the deteriorating power supply and propose effective solutions.
Engineer B.U Mustapha, the Director of Distribution Services at the Federal Ministry of Power, signed the communication urging the CEOs to prioritize finding lasting solutions to the power supply issues in their respective regions.
Despite efforts to boost power generation, with recent figures surpassing 4000MW, certain Distribution Companies (DISCOs) have been identified for their underperformance. The Minister highlighted deliberate neglect of power supply from TCN by some DISCOs and incidents of vandalism damaging power infrastructure in various regions.
Looking ahead, the Minister emphasized the importance of DISCOs meeting performance standards. Failure to do so may result in severe penalties or even the revocation of licenses. Additionally, TCN has been directed to expedite repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to restore supply in affected areas.
The Minister’s proactive approach extends beyond summoning DISCOs and TCN. He has conducted supervisory visits to key power generating plants across the country, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing electricity challenges. During these visits, assurances were given regarding the settlement of outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies.
In conclusion, while the Minister acknowledges the challenges ahead, he remains optimistic about improving the electricity situation nationwide. He urges patience from electricity consumers as efforts are underway to resolve these issues promptly and effectively.
