The Nigerian Army has distanced itself from reported financial demands made to selected trainees undergoing training at the Depot, Nigerian Army, Zaria, for vetting.
Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, stated in a Thursday statement that these purported demands are the result of fraudulent actions by unidentified individuals.
Nwachukwu emphasized that these claims are not only fraudulent but also criminal, and must be addressed promptly.
He clarified that throughout the history of the Nigerian Army, the training of potential recruits and officer cadets has been fully funded by the Army itself. Therefore, any attempt to extort money from the families of successful candidates is viewed as criminal and tarnishing the Army’s reputation.
Nwachukwu urged parents and guardians to disregard such false demands and report anyone attempting to exploit them. Efforts are underway to identify the source of these messages and take appropriate action.
He reiterated that the training of potential recruits and officer cadets is entirely covered by the Nigerian Army and cautioned the public to be vigilant against criminal schemes aimed at defrauding them.
