In a series of tweets on Monday, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate for the 2023 presidential election, expressed deep concern over the alarming state of Nigeria’s economy, which he believes may be the worst in the nation’s history.
He lamented the tragic incident in Lagos where desperate citizens lost their lives in a stampede while trying to purchase discounted rice.
Obi emphasized the severity of the hardship faced by millions of Nigerians, with over 80% now classified as multi-dimensionally poor. He highlighted Nigeria’s alarming hunger index, ranking 109th out of 125 countries, and cited the skyrocketing food inflation rate, exceeding 35%.
The former governor voiced his dismay at the government’s misplaced priorities, criticizing excessive spending on luxuries while neglecting the basic needs of the populace. He urged the government to prioritize investment in agriculture, particularly in utilizing the vast uncultivated lands in the North for food production.
Despite the challenges, Obi commended the resilience of the Nigerian people and their unwavering hope for a better future. He called on the government to take decisive action to address hunger and ensure the safety of farmers, emphasizing the urgent need for agricultural investment to alleviate the nation’s suffering.
