Nigerian Catholic Bishops Reaffirm Traditional Marriage Stance, Reject Same-Sex Blessings

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has restated the Church’s teachings on marriage and its opposition to the idea of blessing same-sex unions within the country.

Following their First Plenary Meeting, the CBCN issued a communiqué reaffirming marriage as a sacrament between one man and one woman, drawing from the Code of Canon Law and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The theme of the first plenary meeting was “Synodality and the State of the Nation,” as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The Bishops rejected interpretations of the “Fiducia Supplicans” declaration suggesting that priests could bless same-sex couples, along with other unions such as those involving polygamists, divorcees, and remarried individuals, if such unions were seen as legitimizing them.

They underscored their adherence to the teachings of Christ and the Pope, explicitly stating that priests in Nigeria are not authorized to bless same-sex couples.

The CBCN’s stance reflects the Church’s enduring stance on marriage and sexual ethics, highlighting the sanctity of traditional marriage and the rejection of practices contrary to natural law. The issue of blessing same-sex couples has sparked widespread debate, with various Episcopal Conferences taking a stand on the matter.

The communiqué reiterated the Church’s traditional teaching on marriage as the union between one man and one woman. It firmly rejected interpretations of the “Fiducia Supplicans” declaration suggesting that priests could bless same-sex couples or other couples in irregular situations.

The Bishops reaffirmed their loyalty to the teachings of Christ and the Pope, asserting that priests are not permitted to bless same-sex couples in Nigeria.

In solidarity with Nigerians amid rising insecurity and economic challenges, the Bishops urged the government to prioritize the protection of lives and properties. They called for unity and social responsibility, emphasizing synodality as a fundamental aspect of the

Church’s nature, which promotes collective decision-making and active participation. Additionally, they recommended the establishment of State Police and the enhancement of agriculture to boost the economy.

The Bishops stressed the importance of repentance and advocated for genuine changes to address corruption and promote good governance. They encouraged all Nigerians to collaborate for the common good, expressing hope for a brighter future, particularly during the Lenten season.

They highlighted the significance of Lent in fostering repentance, reconciliation, and sanctification, emphasizing prayer and almsgiving as means to deepen one’s relationship with God and demonstrate care for the less privileged.
