Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing urban planning regulations, including the demolition of structures found to contravene the state’s planning laws.
Speaking at a media briefing, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the impartiality of the government’s actions, noting that even residences belonging to government officials have been subject to demolition for violations.
Last year saw a resurgence of demolition activities in Lagos, with both state authorities and the Federal Housing Authority targeting structures in various areas such as Ikota, Lekki, Alaba, Ajao Estate, Abule Ado, and Ladipo Market.
These demolitions were carried out on buildings deemed to have flouted the city’s master plan, often obstructing drainage channels and leading to the displacement of numerous families.
Sanwo-Olu underscored the importance of adhering to planning laws, particularly in a city prone to flooding like Lagos. He stressed that the government’s actions are based on factual assessments, not emotional reactions, and are aimed at maintaining the safety and well-being of all residents.
While acknowledging the challenges associated with enforcing regulations, the governor emphasized the necessity of upholding them to ensure the city’s resilience and sustainability.
He reassured citizens that the government’s actions are guided by the principles of fairness and equity, emphasizing that ethnicity plays no role in decision-making processes. Sanwo-Olu pledged to address any grievances promptly and rectify any injustices that may arise from the enforcement of regulations.
