Protests erupted in Oyo State, located in South-West Nigeria, on Monday, driven by frustrations over the soaring cost of living, food inflation, and the prevailing economic challenges in the country.
Taking place in the Mokola area of Ibadan, the state capital, a large number of youths carrying placards gathered, chanting slogans to underscore their grievances.
The placards displayed various messages, including ‘End food price hikes and inflation,’ ‘The impoverished are suffering,’ and ‘Tinubu, fulfill your promises,’ among others.
Despite the presence of armed policemen at the protest scene, demonstrators peacefully expressed their discontent against the economic hardships exacerbated by the removal of petrol subsidies and the consolidation of foreign exchange mechanisms.
The police, having issued a warning on Sunday, were vigilant to prevent any breach of peace during the protest in the state. This demonstration in Oyo follows similar protests in Kano, Minna, and other areas, all reflecting the widespread frustration caused by the removal of petrol subsidies, food inflation, and the escalating cost of living.
