Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has issued a heartfelt apology to Nigerian fans following the team’s defeat in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite initially leading by one goal, the Nigerian side succumbed to hosts Ivory Coast, losing 1-2 in the decisive match.
In the aftermath of the game, Nwabali lamented the loss as a “frustrating conclusion,” emphasizing the team’s accountability for the outcome.
However, he took a moment to express gratitude to the nation for its unwavering support throughout the tournament. “It’s deeply disappointing . I sincerely apologize to Nigerians. As a former fan and still one, I understand the disappointment this loss brings,” he conveyed on his Instagram account. “We shoulder full responsibility. Thank you for your steadfast support until the end. I deeply appreciate each and every one of you.”
Echoing Nwabali’s sentiments, Nigeria’s coach, Jose Peseiro, acknowledged the superiority of the Ivorian team in the post-match interview. “Ivory Coast was superior to us today,” Peseiro conceded. “While it’s a somber moment for us, my team gave their all. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, circumstances dictate the outcome.”
