Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address the deteriorating human rights and rule of law situation in Senegal by organizing an urgent session.

Falana’s call comes in response to President Macky Sall’s decision to postpone this month’s elections, citing a dispute over candidate eligibility.

Falana proposes that ECOWAS consider imposing targeted sanctions, such as travel bans and asset freezes, on Sall and his government officials responsible for violating democratic rights. He cites relevant ECOWAS protocols and treaties, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles.

According to Falana, Sall’s actions amount to a constitutional coup and pose a threat to constitutional governance not only in Senegal but also across the subregion. He highlights Senegal’s obligation to comply with international agreements on democracy and urges ECOWAS to enforce its treaties to protect democratic rights.

Falana stresses that the postponement of elections violates Senegal’s constitution and undermines the will of its people. He calls on ECOWAS leaders to take immediate action to ensure accountability and prevent similar breaches in other member states.
