South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has expressed sorrow regarding the passing of Namibia’s President, Hage Geingob. Geingob’s demise, following a battle with cancer, was announced in a statement signed by Namibia’s acting president, Nangolo Mbumba.
In response to this somber news, Ramaphosa, through his official account, conveyed, “Today, South Africa stands in solidarity with the people of Namibia as we mourn the loss of a leader, patriot, and friend to South Africa. Our hearts go out to the Geingob family and the Namibian people, who have lost an exceptional leader in a year marked by upcoming elections for both our nations.”
Ramaphosa further reflected on his recent visit to Namibia in October 2023, where he was graciously hosted by President Geingob, Madame Geingos, and the Namibian Cabinet. He emphasized Geingob’s significant role in Namibia’s liberation from colonialism and apartheid, as well as his crucial support for South Africa’s struggle for freedom.
Ramaphosa concluded by expressing gratitude and sadness for the loss of a fellow comrade in the fight for liberation and a close ally in promoting democracy. He wished for President Geingob’s soul to rest in peace.
