South Africa has progressed to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinals after defeating the top-ranked team in Africa in a tense encounter.

Evidence Makgopa netted the first goal for South Africa in the 57th minute, followed by Teboho Mokoena’s remarkable free kick finding the back of the net in added time of the second half, sealing Morocco’s exit from the tournament.

Meanwhile, Morocco had an opportunity to equalize when they were awarded a penalty, but Achraf Hakimi failed to convert the spot-kick, leaving South Africa ahead by one goal.

In the final moments of the match, Amrabat received a red card for a reckless challenge, and South Africa extended their lead with another stunning free kick, this time from Moelena.

South Africa will face Cape Verde in the quarterfinals on Saturday, February 3rd.
