The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the prize money for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Côte d’Ivoire 2023, with the champion set to receive a substantial $7 million, while the runner-up will be awarded $4 million.
This announcement, published on CAF’s official website on Thursday, signifies a notable 40% increase in prize money compared to the previous edition of the prestigious competition.
As the 2023 AFCON kicks off in Cote d’Ivoire from January 13 to February 11, featuring the participation of 24 nations, CAF has uniformly raised the prize money across all stages by 40%. The two semi-finalists are slated to each receive $2.5 million, and the four quarter-finalists will be granted $1.3 million each.
In the preceding 2022 AFCON, the winner secured a prize of $5 million, marking a $500,000 increase from the previous edition. The runner-up received $2.75 million, while semi-finalists and quarter-finalists were awarded $2.2 million and $1.175 million, respectively, reflecting increments of $200,000 and $175,000.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized the football body’s significant progress in the past two years, leading to the augmented cash prize for the 2023 edition. Motsepe expressed confidence that a proportion of the prize money would contribute to football development, benefiting various stakeholders and supporting member associations in their administrative endeavors.
