Bishop Kukah to President Tinubu: Government Legitimacy Tied to Ending Killings

The Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah, has delivered a pointed message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, asserting that the legitimacy of his government hinges on putting an end to the senseless killings plaguing the nation.

In his New Year message titled “Blood and Crucifixion On The Plateau,” the bishop stressed that resolving these issues is paramount for reclaiming the essence of the country.

Kukah criticized the government’s explanations for the violence, calling for an end to vague excuses and emphasizing the need for transparent investigations. He urged for the public disclosure of investigation outcomes and the accountability of those involved, asserting that such measures would instill confidence and encourage citizen involvement in their own security.

Expressing collective frustration and a feeling of betrayal among Nigerian citizens, Kukah questioned why the North has become the focal point for various destructive forces, including Boko Haram, banditry, and terrorism. He called upon the intelligence community to identify the root causes of the violence, emphasizing the strategic importance of understanding the goals and locations of the perpetrators.

While commending the government for its responses to the tragedies, Kukah underscored that rapid responses alone are insufficient. He advocated for more comprehensive strategies, beyond mere physical infrastructure, to rebuild community cohesion and resilience. The bishop emphasized the urgency of rebuilding hearts and communities, stating that justice for criminals and victims alike is essential for genuine reconciliation.

Addressing economic concerns, Kukah stressed the importance of a secure environment as a foundation for economic development. He called on President Tinubu to focus on restoring communities and the nation, ultimately reclaiming the essence of the country.
