Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who previously served as the Acting Governor of Ondo State, has officially assumed the role of governor after a swearing-in ceremony held at the Cocoa Conference Hall in Akure, the state capital.
The chief judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola, administered the oath at 5:18 pm.
Aiyedatiwa faced challenges, including an impeachment plot by allies of the late Governor Akeredolu in the Ondo State House of Assembly. Despite opposition, he successfully navigated through the political intricacies to become the governor.
The political landscape in the state has been fraught with controversy, leading activists and constitutional lawyers to call for the constitutional transfer of power to Aiyedatiwa amid Akeredolu’s health issues.
Governor Akeredolu, who battled health complications, passed away on December 27, 2023, due to prostate cancer. Before his demise, on December 13, 2023, Akeredolu, a second-term governor, officially handed over power to Aiyedatiwa as he embarked on another medical trip overseas, marking the second one in 2023.
Unfortunately, Akeredolu, aged 67, could not return to Nigeria, succumbing to the health challenges he faced.
