Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has unveiled an ambitious initiative to incentivize healthcare workers to serve in rural areas—a substantial 30% increase in their salaries.
This announcement took place during the launch of the distribution of N100,000 and essential food items to elderly citizens aged 65 and above. The event marked the commencement of the Renewed Hope Initiative led by the Nigerian First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.
Expressing the administration’s dedication to elderly welfare, Governor Zulum, represented by Prof Baba Malam Gana, the state Commissioner for Health, outlined plans to deploy specialized physicians focused on elderly care in health facilities throughout the state. Moreover, the governor disclosed the establishment of a dedicated department catering to the elderly within the Borno State University Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri.
The distribution event, presided over by Borno’s First Lady, Dr. Falmata Zulum, targeted 250 vulnerable elderly citizens, providing them with financial support and essential supplies. The gesture aimed to alleviate economic challenges faced by the elderly, particularly during the festive season.
Dr. Falmata Zulum underscored the paramount importance of prioritizing initiatives for the elderly, urging them to embrace life, focus on health, nurture their minds, and fortify connections with loved ones and spirituality. She emphasized these aspects as keys to leading a rich and fulfilling life during their golden years.
