Youcef Atal, the Algerian footballer playing for Ligue 1 side Nice, is set to stand trial in France on charges of inciting hatred.
The accusations stem from a video he shared on Instagram featuring a Palestinian preacher, Mahmoud Al Hasanat, discussing the situation in Gaza. Prosecutors identified extracts where the preacher allegedly called for a “black day” for Jews and encouraged actions against Israel.
Atal, who deleted the post and apologized, initially faced a terrorism justification probe, but charges were later adjusted to “incitement to religious hatred.” If convicted, he could face imprisonment and fines. Two associations, Licra and the Jewish Observatory of France, have brought civil actions against him.
Atal has been under judicial supervision, with travel restrictions only lifted for professional football engagements. His club suspended him, and the football league banned him for seven matches following the incident.
