Despite being handed a one-match ban, Mikel Arteta is unwavering in his commitment to display emotion on the touchline.
The Arsenal manager will be absent from the dugout during Arsenal’s clash with Aston Villa following his third yellow card of the season, awarded during Tuesday’s thrilling 4-3 win over Luton. Referee Samuel Barrott penalized Arteta for what was deemed an excessive celebration, particularly after Declan Rice’s late winning goal.
In a statement on Friday, the 41-year-old coach expressed his difficulty in curbing his emotions, stating, “I don’t know how to stop it.” Arteta explained that the intense moments on the field can lead to a loss of awareness of one’s surroundings.
While acknowledging the ban that prevents him from being on the touchline, Arteta emphasized that the decision is aligned with the rules in place.
Despite recognizing the need to respect certain boundaries, Arteta asserted his desire to be with his players, stating, “When you get those moments in sport, you should be able to do that.”
He conveyed his understanding of the regulations for being at an away ground but conveyed his eagerness to be present and celebratory with the team if given the chance.
Adding to the situation, Arteta could potentially face an additional ban as he has been charged by the Football Association for comments made after Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat by Newcastle in November.
His criticism of the video assistant referee’s decision to allow Newcastle’s goal was described as “embarrassing” and a “disgrace.”
