Sanusi Lamido Advocates Thorough Audit of NNPC, Attributes Job Loss to Transparency Push

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has called for a comprehensive audit of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and revealed that advocating for this very measure played a role in his dismissal from the apex bank.

Addressing the Bank Directors Summit at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Sanusi, who held the position of CBN governor from June 2009 to February 2014, emphasized his stance that the President should not concurrently serve as the Minister of Petroleum.

Sanusi stressed the importance of retaining the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) until the banking sector collectively settles its financial obligations.

He highlighted the imperative for the banking industry to rebuild public trust, asserting that there’s no need to amend the CBN Act to safeguard the apex bank from political influences.

In August, President Bola Tinubu, following a precedent set by his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, restructured the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. This restructuring led to the appointment of Ekperipe Ekpo as Minister of State, Gas Resources, and Heineken Lokpobiri as Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, while maintaining the substantive position of Minister of Petroleum Resources for himself
