Everton has formally lodged an appeal against the unprecedented decision to dock them 10 Premier League points for financial rule infractions.
This substantial penalty, deemed the largest in Premier League history, was imposed by an independent commission. The club has submitted its appeal to the Premier League’s judicial panel, and the process will move forward with the appointment of an appeal board to adjudicate the case.
While Everton admitted to the breach, they expressed profound “shock and disappointment” at the severity of the imposed penalty. The appeal proceedings are anticipated to be resolved before the conclusion of the current season.
In an official statement, Everton Football Club declared, “Today, Everton Football Club has formally lodged its appeal challenging the decision by a Premier League commission to impose a 10-point deduction on the club with the chair of the Premier League’s judicial panel.”
According to BBC Sport, the club remains uninformed about the rationale behind the independent commission’s decision to impose a 10-point deduction, contending that a sporting penalty for financial rule transgressions is inherently unjust.
The appeal will be presented to a panel entrusted with scrutinizing the commission’s ruling, evaluating procedural aspects, and rendering a judgment on the fairness of the imposed penalty. The deduction of points has seen Everton plummet from the 14th position to the 19th spot in the Premier League standings.
