Ondo State Retirees Rejoice as Governor Akeredolu Initiates N1 Billion Gratuity Payout

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has launched the disbursement of N1 billion in gratuity for teachers and local government workers who retired in 2011. Represented by Mr. Dare Aragbaiye, his Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties, Akeredolu disclosed that the funds were sourced from the October allocation from the federation account.

This substantial payment, aimed at gradually clearing the backlog of gratuity arrears for retired local government and primary school teachers, is part of the governor’s commitment to retirees’ welfare.

Governor Akeredolu assured that additional disbursements would follow in the first quarter of the coming year. Notably, the initiative has already benefited some distressed pensioners who retired in 2012. Akeredolu underscored his administration’s dedication to settling all outstanding salaries, pensions, and allowances, ensuring financial relief for retirees.

In his address, the governor outlined ongoing efforts to bolster security, eradicate criminal activities, and curb cult-related incidents in the state. He emphasized that creating a safe environment for citizens to conduct their daily activities is a top priority for his administration.

Hon Takuro Amidu, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, credited Governor Akeredolu for proactively initiating the gratuity payment by diligently saving funds each month. Amidu reiterated the governor’s commitment to prioritizing the financial well-being of senior citizens.

Pensioners expressed gratitude, noting the considerable challenges they faced during the 12-year period without receiving their gratuities. Many retirees expressed their intention to utilize the funds to settle accumulated debts. Chief Ojo Samuel, a retiree, shared the personal hardships he endured post-retirement and expressed relief at finally being able to access the long-awaited benefits.

Johnson Osunyemi, the chairman of pensioners in Ondo State, hailed the N1 billion payment as a positive and unprecedented gesture, expressing confidence in Governor Akeredolu’s continued commitment to improving the welfare of pensioners in the state.
