Nigerian Defence Academy Breaks New Ground as Lieutenant Colonel Surajo Imam Earns Professorship

Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar-Surajo Imam has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first serving officer in the Nigerian Army to be honored with the title of professor.

The distinguished title of Professor of Mechatronics Engineering was officially conferred upon him by the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). This notable recognition and promotion were formally approved during the NDA Council Meeting in September, with the appointment taking effect from October 1, 2022.

In a statement released by the Registrar of the Academy, Brigadier General A.M Tukur, it was highlighted that Lieutenant Colonel Imam not only serves as the Head of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering but also played a pivotal role in the development of the field.

The Council’s decision to grant him the title reflects a profound confidence in Imam’s capabilities and a sincere acknowledgment of his significant contributions.

The statement underscored the new professor’s outstanding services and unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of excellence within the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at the NDA.

Hailing from Kankia in Katsina State, Professor Abubakar-Surajo Imam holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano State. His academic journey continued with a master’s degree in Mechatronics from Newcastle University, United Kingdom, followed by a PhD in Mechatronics and Robotics from the same esteemed institution.

Lieutenant Colonel Imam initiated his military career as a member of Short Service Combatant Course 32, subsequently joining the Nigerian Army Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. His distinguished service includes positions in various units, such as 1 Base Workshop, Technical Group EME, HQ Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Corps, and Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

Beyond his military responsibilities, the new professor serves as an Examiner and a Member of the Central Selection Committee for Master’s and PhD candidates sponsored by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, showcasing his dedication to both academic and military excellence.
