Affordable Housing Initiative: Federal Government Set to Begin Construction of 34,500 Units in Thirty States

In its bid to provide basic infrastructure to the people, the Federal Government has unveiled ambitious plans to kickstart the construction of 34,500 housing units across thirty states in the nation, encompassing key regions like Kano, Lagos, Rivers, Borno, Enugu, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This announcement was made by the Federal Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Musa Dangiwa, during his address at the 12th Meeting of the National Council of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development held in Kaduna.

The upcoming construction, slated to begin before December, marks the initiation of Phase 1 for the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates and Slum Upgrading Programme. The proposed 34,500 housing units will feature a diverse range, catering to the needs of low-income earners with 1, 2, and 3-bedroom affordable multi-level flats and bungalows. Moreover, high-end detached bungalows, terraces, and duplexes are set to be incorporated for those with higher income levels across thirty states and the FCT.

Minister Dangiwa, emphasizing the government’s commitment to affordability, outlined various options post-completion, including Rent-to-Own, Public Rental, Mortgage Loans, and, where applicable, outright sale.

Simultaneously, the Federal Government has an ambitious plan to upgrade 26 slums across the country’s six regions, including the Federal Capital Territory. This comprehensive initiative aims to elevate living standards by introducing critical infrastructure such as access roads, water supply, solar street lights, drainages, sanitation, and waste management services.

Arc. Musa Dangiwa underscored the project’s significance, stating, “This initiative is set to provide essential infrastructure and ancillary services, including access roads, water supply, solar streetlights, drainages, sanitation, and waste management services, all contributing to an improvement in living standards for residents in the project sites and the broader urban poor community.”
