The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has affirmed the victory of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah in the governorship election held on March 18.
The court decisively dismissed the appeal lodged by Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party governorship candidate, deeming it devoid of merit. This decision aligns seamlessly with the judgment previously rendered by the Enugu Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in September.
A three-member panel, led by Justice Tijani Yusuf Hassan, meticulously reviewed the case and held that the appellant failed to substantiate the crucial claim that Governor Mbah had forged his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate, thereby challenging his eligibility to contest the election.
This verdict comes in the wake of a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, which imposed a fine of N5 million in damages against the NYSC. The court found the NYSC and its Director General guilty of misrepresenting material facts by erroneously asserting that Governor Mbah’s discharge certificate was fraudulent.
