Juventus has extended its unwavering support to midfielder Nicolo Fagioli after he received a seven-month suspension for violating betting regulations.
The 22-year-old was handed a 12-month ban, with five months of it suspended, and fined 12,500 euros (£10,850). In addition to the ban and fine, Fagioli will undergo therapy to address his gambling problem.
Juventus has pledged to assist Fagioli in adhering to the prescribed therapy plan. This therapy program will span a minimum of six months. Fagioli was found to have breached regulations related to betting on football events organized by the Italian football federation (FIGC), UEFA, and FIFA. It was alleged that Fagioli used multiple identities to place bets on unauthorized websites.
In an official statement on their website, Juventus confirmed their “full support” for Fagioli. The club expressed their firm belief that, with the support of the team, his family, and the professionals guiding him, Fagioli will confront the therapeutic and training process with a strong sense of responsibility.
The statement also conveyed the expectation that once his suspension is completed, Fagioli will return to competition with a sense of calm and confidence.
Fagioli is one among several players currently under investigation, including Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo, who is on loan at Aston Villa from Galatasaray. They are all part of a wider inquiry into betting activities in Italian football. Newcastle officially acknowledged that Tonali is being investigated by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and confirmed his cooperation with the investigation.
Furthermore, Tonali and Zaniolo were both removed from Italy’s training camp this week, while Fagioli, who holds one senior international cap, was not included in the squad for recent matches against Malta and England.
