Chelsea, the reigning Women’s Super League champions, clinched the top spot on the table by defeating West Ham, thanks to Sam Kerr’s first goal of the season.
Kerr initially had a goal disallowed for offside but managed to break the deadlock in the 36th minute. Positioned unmarked at the back post, she rose to head in a cross delivered by Niamh Charles. This cross came from Fran Kirby, the English forward who was making her first start since February after recovering from a knee injury that kept her out of the Women’s World Cup.
Although Chelsea dominated the match, Lauren James had a golden opportunity to double their lead from a superb pass by Kirby. However, Hammers goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold made a crucial save with her legs.
Substitute Erin Cuthbert sealed the win with a goal in stoppage time, securing all three points for Chelsea.
This victory extended Chelsea’s remarkable home winning streak in the Women’s Super League, making it their 17th consecutive win in the competition. They have not dropped points at Kingsmeadow or Stamford Bridge since a goalless draw with Arsenal in February 2022.
West Ham has yet to defeat Chelsea in their 11 Women’s Super League encounters, although they had opportunities to equalize when they were behind 1-0. Various chances, including shots by Emma Harries, Viviane Asseyi, Riko Ueki, and Kirsty Smith, did not find the back of the net. Blues’ goalkeeper Zecira Musovic made several vital saves.
