Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has made a significant announcement, revealing his intention to rename the state’s International Passenger and Cargo Airport in a poignant tribute to the late literary luminary, Prof. Chinua Achebe.
This renaming decision is a profound acknowledgment of Achebe’s lasting contributions to the nation of Nigeria.
Governor Soludo unveiled this plan during the Independence Day parade held in Awka, emphasizing Achebe’s status as an eminent but often underappreciated African hero.
Expressing his satisfaction with the recognition of various contributors to Nigeria’s 1960 independence through the naming of projects, Governor Soludo noted that these projects predominantly bore the names of public officeholders.
In a break from convention, his administration aims to honor Achebe by renaming the Anambra Airport in his memory.
Soludo articulated his vision: “We must convey the message that one doesn’t need to hold political office to make meaningful contributions to the progress of our society. Henceforth, we will be deliberate in identifying and celebrating our unsung heroes, serving as inspirations to our youth. These heroes encompass distinguished educators, medical professionals, individuals of integrity, philanthropists with transparent wealth sources, innovative entrepreneurs, community leaders and developers, devoted clergy, and more.”
He continued, “One quintessential example of an unsung hero is the late Professor Albert Chinualumogu Achebe. Achebe was not a President, Governor, or Minister. He didn’t construct physical infrastructure like bridges, roads, or airports. Yet, his legacy will outlive most presidents, governors, or ministers. Achebe bestowed upon African literature a unique identity and powerful voice. In essence, he redefined our cultural narrative, and his impact is indelible. While Achebe may not be celebrated as a hero in Anambra or Nigeria alone, he belongs to Africa and the world at large.”
Governor Soludo concluded with the official announcement: “As a testament to his enduring influence, we have decided to rename the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport in Umueri to CHINUA ACHEBE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, UMUERI. Moreover, we envision this to be an international airport and intend to collaborate with the Federal Government to realize its international status fully.”
