A court in the capital of the Central African Republic (CAR), Bangui, has sentenced the exiled former president of the country, Francois Bozizé, to life imprisonment.
BozizĂ©, who is now leading a rebel coalition, was convicted in absentia on charges that included rebellion and undermining the nation’s security.
The verdict, delivered on Thursday, lacks specific details regarding the period under consideration or the precise nature of the crimes involved. Notably, more than 20 other individuals, including two of BozizĂ©’s sons, were also convicted in their absence.
Francois Bozizé initially seized power in the CAR in 2003 but was overthrown a decade later, sparking a prolonged civil conflict that tragically claimed the lives of thousands. Currently, he resides in Guinea-Bissau.
