David de Gea could contemplate retirement if he doesn’t receive an offer to be the primary goalkeeper at a prominent club.
The former Manchester United and Spanish national team No. 1 has turned down several offers, even from Saudi Arabia, with financial gain not being his primary incentive.
De Gea is diligently maintaining his fitness in the hope of receiving an offer from the right club and a manager who believes he is still in his prime. Following his departure from Manchester United over the summer, De Gea, who will turn 33 in November, aspires to play for a club that is capable of competing for major honors.
De Gea’s exit from Manchester United marked the conclusion of an incredibly successful 12-year tenure during which he secured the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Europa League. He earned the Premier League Golden Glove award twice, including in the previous season, and was selected for the PFA Team of the Year on five occasions.
Additionally, he received United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, as voted for by fans, a record-breaking three consecutive seasons and a total of four times.
De Gea is believed to be disheartened by the way his departure from Manchester United unfolded after his contract expired.
The club’s desire to replace him as the primary goalkeeper with André Onana resulted in an offer for a new contract with reduced terms, despite De Gea being one of United’s highest earners, with a weekly wage of approximately £375,000. Negotiations reached an impasse in July, preventing De Gea from bidding farewell to the supporters in a proper manner.
