President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized the strategic role of the African Union (AU) in securing consensus positions for the continent on global economic and socio-political relations, with Nigeria’s steadfast support.
This statement was made during a bilateral discussion in New York with President Azali Assoumani, who is the President of the Union of Comoros and currently serves as the Chairperson of the African Union (AU).
This information was provided in a statement issued by President Tinubu’s spokesperson, Chief Ajuri Ngelale. President Tinubu underscored the significance of embracing freedom and constitutional order as essential elements of sustainable development. He commended the AU’s efforts in promoting peace in the Sahel region and its mediation in the Sudanese conflict. He expressed Nigeria’s commitment to collaborate with the AU to achieve stability and prosperity for the African continent.
President Azali Assoumani, in his capacity as the AU Chairperson, emphasized that the AU aims to complement Nigeria’s endeavors in ensuring peace and prosperity in Africa, rather than engaging in competition. He stressed the importance of addressing unconstitutional power struggles and highlighted the need for stability in countries affected by coup attempts to foster successful developmental partnerships.
Furthermore, President Azali Assoumani, as the President of the Union of Comoros, expressed a desire to learn from Nigeria’s experience in managing diversity, conducting credible elections, and achieving economic growth. He sought Nigeria’s cooperation to conduct elections that would earn international respect and facilitate Comoros’ development.
In addition, President Tinubu welcomed the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha. He acknowledged the strategic role of the Islamic world in promoting peace and development, both in Africa and globally. President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to collaborate with the OIC in uplifting the lives of Nigerians and Africans.
The leader of the OIC, representing 57 member nations, praised President Tinubu for his proactive efforts in fostering mutual understanding among African states and extended an invitation for him to participate in the upcoming OIC Heads of State Summit.
