Comrade Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, faced an unexpected hurdle when he arrived at the Government House in Benin, the state’s capital – his office was locked.
This incident is a continuation of the ongoing dispute between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki regarding the upcoming succession plans.
Governor Obaseki is nearing the end of his two-term tenure in 2024, and a clash has emerged as Shaibu, his deputy since 2016, aspires to succeed him, while Obaseki has different preferences.
Amidst this turmoil, Shaibu had accused Obaseki of plotting his impeachment, which prompted him to take legal action to prevent such a move.
However, he later withdrew the lawsuit following the intervention of prominent members and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
Despite these developments, tensions have persisted. The deputy governor’s office was relocated to an unfinished building outside the Government House, and a dispute between Shaibu and some of Governor Obaseki’s aides led to the disbandment of Shaibu’s media team.
On Monday, Shaibu’s predicament deepened when he found the entrance to his office locked, further highlighting the ongoing discord between the two.
