China achieved their first victory at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, triumphing over Haiti in Group D, even though they played with only 10 players for over an hour.
This significant win for China has implications for England, who earlier on Friday secured a 1-0 victory against Denmark but have not yet qualified for the last 16.
Midfielder Zhang Rui received a red card in the 29th minute for a dangerous knee-high challenge on Haiti’s Sherly Jeudy. Despite being one player short, China managed to secure the winning goal when Wang Shuang converted a penalty in the 74th minute, courtesy of a foul by Ruthny Mathurin on Zhang Linyan.
Had China drawn or lost to Haiti, England would have advanced to the knockout stages with one match to spare.
However, with this outcome, the group’s fate remains uncertain heading into the final matches on Tuesday. England, currently leading with six points, will face China, while Denmark will compete against Haiti simultaneously.
Presently, both China and Denmark have three points, while Haiti, making their first appearance in the World Cup, has yet to earn any points. However, there is still a chance for Haiti to qualify if they defeat Denmark and China loses to the Lionesses.
