Another High Court in Abuja has invalidated the arrest and detention of Godwin Emefiele, the Suspended Central Bank Governor, by the Department of State Services (DSS). Justice Bello Kawu, delivering the judgment, ruled that the arrest, detention, and interrogation of Mr. Emefiele were in direct contravention of the existing judgment and orders issued by Justice M. A. Hassan.
Acting on behalf of Mr. Emefiele, his counsel, Peter Abang, requested the court to overturn and invalidate the illegal and null arrest and detention, referring to the previous court judgment on December 29, 2022.
The Justice delivering the judgment, Justice Kawu further issued an order to nullify any arrest warrant obtained or procured by the Respondents, particularly the DSS, in relation to the allegations of terrorism financing, fraudulent practices, money laundering, and threats to national security.
The court also granted an injunction restraining the respondents, specifically the DSS, from arresting, detaining, or interfering with Mr. Emefiele’s personal liberty and freedom of movement. Finally, the court granted an injunction mandating the Respondents, particularly the DSS, to immediately release Mr. Emefiele from any form of arrest or detention.
