President Bola Tinubu has emerged as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
This significant appointment was made during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc, held in the capital of Guinea-Bissau, Bissau. During the session, Tinubu received the handover documents from the outgoing chairman, President Umaro Embaló of Guinea-Bissau.
After assuming the role, President Tinubu emphasized the significance of democracy and expressed his commitment to its principles. He acknowledged the challenges democracy poses but underscored its importance as the chosen form of government. The ECOWAS Chairmanship is a rotational position held by the heads of state or government of member countries, with each leader serving a one-year term. Former President Buhari previously held this position from 2018 to 2019.
While the Chairman does not possess executive powers, the role holds strategic importance in terms of conflict resolution, advocacy, and serving as a liaison with the President of the ECOWAS Commission. The Commission’s President is responsible for the day-to-day management and implementation of ECOWAS policies and decisions.
President Tinubu’s appointment as Chairman of ECOWAS reflects his leadership and the recognition of his role in promoting regional cooperation and development among West African nations.
