Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga to four points over rivals Real Madrid, despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Real Betis. While the result sees them maintain their position atop the table, Xavi Hernandez’s side will be disappointed not to have secured all three points, especially given their dominant performance throughout the match. Their seven-match winning streak in all competitions came to an end against a disciplined Betis side.
The game began with a flash of brilliance from Barcelona, as they showcased some exceptional one-touch football in the seventh minute. Midfielder Gavi latched onto a well-placed pass, breaking through the Betis defense, and calmly slotted the ball home from a tight angle to give the hosts the lead. However, Betis quickly responded, leveling the score just 10 minutes later. Defender Natan rose highest to head home Giovani lo Celso’s corner, bringing the visitors back into the game.
Barcelona continued to press for the lead, and their best chance to regain it came midway through the second half. Full-back Jules Kounde, positioned close to goal, struck the ball with his weaker foot, but his effort was expertly saved by Betis goalkeeper Adrian, who blocked the shot with his body.
The draw also ended Real Betis’ four-match winning streak in La Liga, with their attacking duo of Cucho Hernandez and Manchester United loanee Antony failing to make an impact in front of goal.
Earlier on Saturday, Real Madrid suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Valencia, conceding a 95th-minute winner that handed Los Ches their first win over Madrid since 2008, further solidifying Barcelona’s advantage at the top.
Looking ahead, Barcelona will now turn their focus to their upcoming Champions League quarter-final tie against Borussia Dortmund, with the first leg set to take place at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.
