Ipswich Earn First 2025 Win to Stun Bournemouth and Hampers European Hopes

Relegation-threatened Ipswich Town claimed their first Premier League victory of 2025, stunning Bournemouth and damaging their hopes of qualifying for Europe. The hosts came close to taking an early lead when Alex Scott’s powerful shot was cleared off the line by Ipswich defender Dara O’Shea. However, it was the visitors who struck first shortly after.

Nathan Broadhead, the Wales international, scored his first-ever Premier League goal by collecting the ball following a brilliant run from Julio Enciso. Broadhead then cut inside Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen before firing a shot through the legs of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to give Ipswich the lead.

Ipswich, who had been winless in the league since a 2-0 victory over Chelsea on December 30, 2024, had also been the only team across the top four divisions of English football yet to register a league win in 2025.

Bournemouth came close to equalizing early in the second half when Scott unleashed a powerful 20-yard strike, but Ipswich goalkeeper Alex Palmer produced a stunning save to tip the ball over the bar. On the hour mark, Ipswich extended their lead as Liam Delap scored his 11th goal of the season. Delap lashed the ball past Arrizabalaga following a precise pullback from Conor Townsend.

The Cherries thought they had a chance to get back into the game when referee Rob Jones awarded them a penalty for a challenge by Axel Tuanzebe on Antoine Semenyo. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, and the referee ruled the contact had occurred just outside the penalty area, awarding Ipswich a free-kick instead.

Bournemouth didn’t give up and pulled a goal back in the 67th minute. Evanilson reacted quickest to convert the rebound after Palmer had parried a shot from Lewis Cook. The hosts dominated possession in the final stages, but Ipswich held firm to secure only their fourth league win of the season, leaving Bournemouth’s European aspirations hanging by a thread.
