Hollerbach’s Late Equalizer Earns Union Berlin 1-1 Draw Against Bayern Munich, Who Extend Bundesliga Lead

A moment of uncertainty from Union Berlin goalkeeper Jonas Urbig allowed Benedict Hollerbach to score a late equalizer, as the hosts secured a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich on Saturday. Despite the draw, Bayern extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings to nine points.

Bayern, chasing a record-extending 34th league title, moved up to 62 points, while second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, with a game in hand, will face VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern started the match on the front foot, dominating possession and pinning Union Berlin into their own half. However, the hosts remained compact defensively, restricting Bayern to mostly long-range attempts.

Bayern’s best chance in a goalless first half came in stoppage time, when Michael Olise played Serge Gnabry through on goal. However, Gnabry’s shot from a tight angle was expertly saved by Union Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow.

After the break, Bayern continued to press. Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane both squandered opportunities from promising positions, but it was Leroy Sane, who came on as a substitute, that finally broke the deadlock in the 75th minute. He fired home from Olise’s cutback to give Bayern the lead. However, just moments later, Union Berlin capitalized on a rare mistake from Urbig, and Hollerbach’s late goal earned the hosts a share of the spoils.
