Virgil van Dijk has stated that discussions with Liverpool regarding a new contract are “not on hold,” but he admitted that he still has “no idea” what the future holds when his current deal expires in the summer.
The Liverpool captain’s comments come after his side was knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 on Tuesday night. Following the match, Van Dijk spoke to reporters and revealed that, despite ongoing talks with the club, there has been no clear resolution on whether he will remain at Liverpool or become a free agent at the end of this season.
“I have no idea. I still have no idea at the moment,” Van Dijk confessed when asked about his future with the club. “Genuinely. I have no idea right now. It’s not on hold. Nothing is on hold. I keep saying the same thing — there are 10 games left this season, and that is my full focus.”
He went on to clarify that there are still discussions happening behind the scenes, but that no major decisions have been made. “If there’s any news, you’ll hear it from me. But at the moment, I don’t even know what’s going to happen next year. If anyone tells you they know, they’re lying to your face.”
Along with Van Dijk, key players Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also face uncertain futures, as their contracts are set to expire at the end of the current campaign.
