One of Celtic’s most memorable Champions League nights ended in heartbreak as Bayern Munich scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser, sending them through to the last 16.
Brendan Rodgers’ team more than held their own at the Allianz Arena, looking poised to secure their first-ever knockout-stage win. Early on, Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda, and Nicolas Kuhn all had chances to put Celtic ahead. Despite Bayern’s star forward Harry Kane starting the match, he was forced to leave the pitch at halftime due to injury, which seemed to shift the momentum in Celtic’s favour.
Celtic’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. Kuhn took advantage of some sloppy defending to fire a low shot past Bayern’s keeper, silencing the home crowd and putting the Scottish Premiership champions into a well-earned lead in the second half. With their last win away from home in the competition coming back in 2017, Celtic appeared to be heading for extra time as they held strong in the closing stages. However, disaster struck when Alphonso Davies bundled the ball into the net after Kasper Schmeichel had denied Leon Goretzka, leaving Celtic heartbroken as they were eliminated from the play-offs in the most agonising fashion.
Vincent Kompany’s side now advances to the last 16, where they will face either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen.
