Ethan Nwaneri marked his full Champions League debut with a stunning goal as Arsenal sealed direct qualification to the last 16 with a 2-1 victory over Girona. The 17-year-old winger became the second-youngest English scorer in the competition after Jude Bellingham, curling in a brilliant strike just before halftime to complete Arsenal’s comeback.
Girona, already eliminated from their maiden Champions League campaign, took a surprise lead in the 28th minute when former Tottenham forward Arnaut Danjuma capitalized on a costly mistake by stand-in goalkeeper Neto. The Brazilian, on loan from Bournemouth, was caught far out of position, making Danjuma’s finish all too easy.
Arsenal quickly responded, as Arnau MartÃnez fouled Thomas Partey in the box, allowing Jorginho to calmly convert from the penalty spot. Three minutes before the break, Nwaneri showcased his talent, receiving a pass from Leandro Trossard, weaving past three defenders, and curling a superb finish into the corner to make it 2-1.
Trossard later struck the crossbar, and Girona thought they had equalized in the second half through Cristhian Stuani, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside. Arsenal had a chance to extend their lead in stoppage time when Alejandro Francés handled the ball in the box, but Raheem Sterling’s penalty was saved by Pau López.
Despite the missed opportunity, Mikel Arteta’s side secured a crucial victory, avoiding the play-off round and advancing straight to the knockout stage.
