Newcastle Edge Spurs with Controversial Comeback to Secure Sixth Straight Win

Newcastle United came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, marking their sixth consecutive victory in all competitions. Anthony Gordon’s contentious equalizer and Alexander Isak’s decisive strike moved the Magpies level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, while deepening the struggles of an injury-plagued Spurs side.

Tottenham took an early lead through Dominic Solanke’s fourth-minute header, a bright start that had home fans hopeful. However, just two minutes later, Gordon equalized amid controversy. The ball appeared to strike Joelinton’s hand in the buildup, but VAR upheld the goal, deeming the contact accidental as Joelinton’s arm was in a natural position. The decision left Spurs furious and disrupted their momentum.

Newcastle capitalized further in the 38th minute when Isak, in scintillating form, scrambled in a close-range effort to score in his seventh consecutive Premier League match. Eddie Howe’s side dominated proceedings, while Spurs’ injury woes worsened. Radu Dragusin’s halftime substitution forced full-back Djed Spence into an unfamiliar center-back role, highlighting Tottenham’s growing absentee list, which has now reached double digits.

Despite their patched-up defense, Spurs pressed for an equalizer in the second half. Brennan Johnson struck the post, while substitutes James Maddison and Sergio Reguilón missed chances. However, Newcastle’s resilient defense held firm, ensuring a perfect start to the new year.

The result leaves Ange Postecoglou’s side winless in their last six Premier League home games and languishing in 11th place, closer to the relegation zone than the top four. Meanwhile, Newcastle look ahead to a Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal on Tuesday, while Spurs host Liverpool on Wednesday as they seek to regain form.
