Chelsea’s efforts to turn around their struggling form have been hit with a significant setback as head coach Enzo Maresca revealed that centre-back Wesley Fofana might be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
The 24-year-old defender has not featured since being substituted during the second half of last month’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. While Maresca could not confirm whether Fofana’s hamstring tear will necessitate surgery, the injury is a major blow for both the player and the team. Fofana missed the entirety of last season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, making this latest development all the more disheartening.
“Unfortunately, he could be out for the season,” Maresca admitted. “We don’t know yet if it will be for the entire season, but he will definitely be out for a significant part of it.”
Initially, there was hope that Fofana’s absence would last only a few weeks. The defender had formed an impressive partnership at the heart of Chelsea’s defence alongside Levi Colwill this season, making his loss a critical one for the team as they seek to stabilize their campaign.
