West Ham forward Michail Antonio has undergone surgery for a fractured leg following a serious road traffic accident on Saturday. The 34-year-old striker was involved in a collision in Coppice Row, Epping, which required emergency services to free him from his car.
In a statement on Sunday, West Ham confirmed that Antonio is in recovery and will “continue to be monitored over the coming days,” with further updates on his condition to be provided “when appropriate.” The club extended its gratitude to the emergency services and first responders who attended the scene, as well as to the medical team overseeing Antonio’s treatment. They also expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support from the wider football community. “Everyone at the club wishes Michail a speedy recovery,” the statement read.
Essex Police, who attended the scene of the crash involving a Ferrari sports car, have appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage to assist their investigation. Meanwhile, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service detailed their efforts, explaining that crews responded to the incident at 1:02 p.m. on Saturday and worked to free a man trapped in the vehicle. “Firefighters reported that a man was trapped in his car and worked to release him by 1:45 p.m. The casualty was left in the care of the Ambulance Service,” the fire service said in a statement.
West Ham had earlier confirmed that Antonio was “stable, conscious, and communicating” following the collision. The news has prompted widespread concern and well-wishes for the player, who remains a key figure for the Premier League club.
