Chelsea Edge Past Leicester to Climb to Third in Premier League

Chelsea claimed a crucial 2-1 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, a result that lifts them to third place in the Premier League table. Despite dominating for much of the match, the Blues faced a nervy conclusion as Leicester mounted a spirited late challenge.

From the outset, Chelsea controlled proceedings, commanding an impressive 70% of possession in the first half. Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring with a composed finish midway through the half, capitalizing on Chelsea’s relentless pressure. However, the visitors were unable to convert several other promising chances, leaving the door open for Leicester to respond. As halftime approached, Leicester showed signs of life, with Kasey McAteer coming close to leveling the score.

The second half saw Chelsea maintain their dominance, and their persistence finally paid off in the 75th minute. Jackson’s header forced a save from the Leicester goalkeeper, but Enzo Fernandez was quick to react, heading in the rebound from close range to double the lead.

Leicester, however, refused to go quietly. In the dying moments of stoppage time, Romeo Lavia brought down Bobby De Cordova-Reid in the penalty area. Initially, the referee waved play on, but a VAR review overturned the decision, awarding Leicester a penalty. Jordan Ayew stepped up and confidently placed his shot into the bottom-left corner, just out of Robert Sanchez’s reach, cutting the deficit to one goal.

Despite the late scare, Chelsea managed to see out the remaining seconds and secure a vital three points. The victory moves them up to third place with 22 points, narrowing the gap to second-placed Manchester City to just one point and leaving them six points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.
