Wales Hold Firm in Dramatic Draw Against Turkey to Keep Promotion Hopes Alive

Wales preserved their unbeaten record under manager Craig Bellamy with a hard-fought 0-0 Nations League draw against Turkey, despite a dramatic late penalty miss from Kerem Akturkoglu. The Turkish forward struck the base of the post in the 89th minute after Neco Williams’ challenge on Yunus Akgun had given the hosts a golden opportunity to seal Group B4.

Akturkoglu’s tame effort rolled harmlessly wide as goalkeeper Karl Darlow dived the wrong way, leaving Wales relieved to escape with a valuable point. The result keeps Wales second in the group, two points behind leaders Turkey and two ahead of Iceland, who claimed a 2-0 win over Montenegro. A draw against Iceland on Tuesday would guarantee Wales at least a Nations League play-off spot, while a victory could secure top spot and promotion to League A if Turkey were to lose in Montenegro.

The stalemate in Kayseri was earned the hard way, as Bellamy’s side weathered a barrage of Turkish attacks and embodied the resilience he had demanded before kick-off. Turkey dominated possession, territory, and chances but were frustrated by countless Welsh blocks and defensive heroics.

Wales had their moments, too. Harry Wilson struck the woodwork, and Jordan James saw a first-half goal ruled out for offside after a VAR check. The game also saw a worrying clash of heads between Joe Rodon and Harris, which required extended treatment. Both players continued—Harris sporting a bruised eye and Rodon donning a headband—but they nearly played a decisive role in the closing stages. In stoppage time, Harris set up Wilson for a left-footed shot that struck the post, with the rebound narrowly eluding Brennan Johnson.

Turkey remained dangerous throughout, with Enes Unal missing a close-range chance and Arda Guler spurning another clear opportunity. Wales, however, held firm and survived the late penalty scare to secure a well-earned draw, leaving their promotion hopes alive heading into the final group game.
