Clinical Chelsea Overcome Man City to Claim Top Spot and Make WSL History

Champions Chelsea claimed a crucial 2-0 victory over title rivals Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, leapfrogging their opponents to take top spot in the Women’s Super League and maintain their flawless start to the season. The win, billed as a potential title decider, also saw new manager Sonia Bompastor make history as the first coach in WSL history to win their first seven matches in the competition.

Second-half goals from Mayra Ramirez and Guro Reiten, scored just four minutes apart, secured the three points for Chelsea. Ramirez’s individual brilliance broke the deadlock, as the striker shrugged off City defender Alanna Kennedy with ease before driving forward from halfway and firing a clinical shot into the far corner. Moments later, Reiten doubled the lead with a pinpoint effort from the edge of the box following a well-executed set piece. The quick-fire strikes stunned City, who struggled to recover and could have conceded a third as Chelsea dominated the closing stages.

City, despite controlling possession for much of the match, lacked the cutting edge to trouble Chelsea in the final third. The absence of Lauren Hemp, the league’s most prolific creator, due to a knee injury was keenly felt. Without her influence, City’s attack faltered, with Khadija Shaw—currently the WSL’s top scorer—unable to capitalize on two golden first-half opportunities. She first dragged a shot wide following a misplaced Chelsea pass and later overhit a potential assist to Jil Roord.

Chelsea, on the other hand, showcased their efficiency and resilience. Their dominance at Stamford Bridge continues, having now won all seven of their WSL games at the venue. Last season, Chelsea found themselves chasing both City and Arsenal in the title race, but this decisive win places them firmly in control. They now sit two points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand, marking a strong statement of intent as they aim to defend their crown.
