Barnsley climbed to fourth place in League One with a 2-0 victory over South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham, extending the Millers’ winless streak against the Tykes since 1982. Jon Russell put Barnsley ahead in the 32nd minute, capitalizing on a loose ball after Rotherham goalkeeper Viktor Johansson made an impressive save on his initial header. Russell quickly followed up, converting the rebound to break the deadlock.
Rotherham had started with intensity, as Joe Rafferty unleashed a powerful strike within the opening three minutes, but Barnsley’s defenders crowded him and blocked the shot. Late in the match, Rotherham nearly equalized when Jack Holmes found space at the back post, only to be denied by a sharp save from Barnsley keeper Ben Killip.
Substitute Stephen Humphrys sealed the win for Barnsley with four minutes left. Breaking past Rotherham’s defense, he drilled a low shot into the bottom-right corner from outside the box, doubling Barnsley’s lead and securing the derby victory.
