Chelsea overcame an early controversial Spurs ‘ghost goal,’ which may not have crossed the line, to ultimately thrash their London rivals 5-2, highlighted by a stunning strike from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.
The Blues had initially taken the lead at Kingsmeadow with Maika Hamano’s early goal. However, controversy erupted when Amanda Nilsen’s cross was fumbled by Hannah Hampton, and the assistant referee ruled that the ball had crossed the goal line before the goalkeeper managed to palm it out. Hampton, furious with the decision, was booked for her protests, while former Chelsea men’s goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer later commented that it was “physically impossible” for the assistant to be certain the ball had gone in.
Chelsea regained their composure and restored their lead just before halftime, thanks to a twist of fate. Nilsen, who had earlier played a part in the disputed goal, accidentally headed Guro Reiten’s corner into her own net at the near post. Despite the earlier controversy, Spurs remained competitive for much of the match but were powerless to prevent Kaneryd from extending Chelsea’s lead with a breathtaking volley, 20 minutes from time.
Things unraveled quickly for Spurs after that. Clare Hunt was penalized for a handball in the box, and although Reiten’s penalty hit the post, Sandy Baltimore capitalized on the loose ball, taking her time before firing home Chelsea’s fourth goal. Spurs grabbed a late consolation through Eveliina Summanen’s free-kick, but it was Kaneryd who had the final say, cutting back from the byline after a brilliant solo run to slot past Rebecca Spencer, sealing a commanding 5-2 victory for the Blues.
