Kylian Mbappé, who has reportedly been linked to a rape investigation in Sweden, will reserve any statements for the Swedish justice system “if necessary,” his lawyer said on Thursday.
Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, representing Mbappé, emphasized that he “prioritizes giving his explanations, if required, to the Swedish judiciary.” She also condemned media reports claiming that Mbappé had commented on the events of his trip to Stockholm, calling such allegations “misleading.”
French outlets Le Parisien and RMC Sports reported that during Mbappé’s recent trip to Stockholm, he had consensual relations with a young woman. The reports added that Mbappé has messages from the woman reflecting a “very positive tone,” describing a happy encounter. However, Le Parisien noted that it could not confirm if the complainant in the rape case is the same woman who sent those messages.
Mbappé visited Stockholm with friends from October 9 to 11, after a thigh injury kept him out of France’s Nations League games. During the trip, the group reportedly visited a restaurant and a nightclub. After they left Sweden, a woman filed a police report alleging rape.
On Monday, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported that an investigation had been launched, prompting Mbappé to denounce the report as “fake news” on social media. He suggested the allegations might be linked to his ongoing financial dispute with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “It’s so predictable, the day before the hearing, as if by coincidence.”
A Swedish prosecutor confirmed that an investigation is underway but did not name Mbappé as a suspect.
