Thomas Tuchel was appointed as the new manager of England’s national football team on Wednesday and is set to begin his role on January 1, 2025. The 51-year-old German coach, who has been without a job since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season, will succeed Gareth Southgate as England’s head coach. Tuchel becomes the third foreign manager to lead the Three Lions, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel brings an impressive résumé, having previously managed top clubs such as Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich. His extensive trophy-winning experience aligns with the Football Association’s ambition to end England’s 58-year drought without a major tournament victory.

Despite his strong credentials, the appointment has sparked some criticism, with detractors questioning the FA’s decision to bypass English candidates for the role. However, Tuchel will be supported by English coach Anthony Barry, who previously worked with him at Bayern Munich.

Tuchel’s record speaks for itself, having won league titles at both PSG and Bayern, as well as the German Cup with Dortmund. His most notable success came during his time at Chelsea, where he led the club to Champions League triumph in 2021, just months after taking charge. He also won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup with Chelsea before being sacked in September 2022 by the club’s new ownership.

As the permanent replacement for Southgate, who guided England to the finals of the European Championship and a World Cup semi-final and quarter-final, Tuchel inherits a squad rich in talent. Players like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Cole Palmer make England one of the favorites for the 2026 World Cup, offering Tuchel a strong foundation as he aims to end the nation’s long wait for another major title since their 1966 World Cup victory.
